What is Hairballs?
Hairballs (trichobezoars) form from fur swallowed during grooming. Most cats vomit them occasionally - this is normal. Signs of problems include frequent vomiting (more than once monthly), retching without producing hairball, loss of appetite, constipation, or lethargy. Long-haired breeds are more prone. Prevention includes daily brushing to remove loose fur, hairball-formula food with added fiber, petroleum jelly lubricants, increasing water intake, and cat grass. Frequent hairballs may indicate skin allergies causing over-grooming or gastrointestinal issues preventing hair passage.
